9 Long-Haul Healthy Flying Tips

We’ve been planning for our next trip before the years out began this past weekend – we’re heading back to the US for some last minute business (and pleasure) before the years out and you know what that means… long-haul flights and pulling out all my healthy flying tips and tricks

Travelling healthy is not easy, particularly when you’re fussier than the average person when it comes to what you eat.

It can be easy if you know how to prepare. The key is Preparation!

I decided to living healthy back when I suffered from Leaky Gut a few years ago and I committed to incorporating healthy habits into everyday of my life, this includes both while traveling and being overseas.

The flying part is what people can get stuck out with the most! Here are my,

Top 9 Long-Haul Health Flying Tips:

1.Water – STAY HYDRATED!
Carry a drink bottle with you (Empty and can fill up on the plane)

Leading up to a flight I will drink 1 – 2 liters within 6 hours of flight departure time. While yes this leads to more toilet breaks it also means I become less constipated and my skin doesn’t dry out anywhere near as much. Aim to drink 200ml of water every hour while in the air.

2. Thermos

This is my latest craze, fill up with hot water and you can either used freeze dry bone broth, soup powder or herbal tea and you have a warm snack or drink on hand at any time. Especially great if you’re anything like me and freeze on planes.

3. Supplements

A must not forget. I have customized travel packs made up, little tear packs with the exact nutritional products I need inside – and they have my name on them!

The Essentials:

High potency Vitamin C

Fish Oil with potent antioxidant (ie. means it will be more absorbable)

Multi Vitamin which includes high complex vitamin B’s, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.

Probiotic Sachet (these are the best for flying, no fridge needed and individual serve is ready to go)

I use all pharmaceutical graded Gluten Free, Dairy Free and Vegetarian friendly nutritional products and recommend these to my clients. Since I started with this one brand 3 years ago I have not once not been able to poo on a plane or got sick travelling, even when it took 30+ hours of transit time to get to Sweden from Australia last year.

4. Herbal Tea

In a zip lock bag carry your favourite herbals. These are great for your themos above, and nothing like a tea while watching a movie. Peppermint or Ginger Tea both great for digestion. Chamomile great for staying calm and relaxed, Lemon and Ginger best combo for immune support and detoxifying.

5. Coconut Oil

I pack a little jar of coconut oil and keep it in a zip lock bag so there are no spills. This is great for dry skin, using on your face lightly, lips or even a spoonful if you feel snack’ish. Healthy fats keep you fuller for longer.

6. Moisturiser

In another zip lock bag I always carry a chemical free, parabeen free 38ml moisturizer, lip gloss and toothbrush. Using the moisturizer every time I go to the toilet I have a splash of water on my face and then apply moisturizer – I never get dry skin or break outs now when I fly.

7. Stretch

Stretching in the lounge before boarding is key for me. I’m long limbed and I like to get mobile. I also stretch every 2 hours whilst on the plane key areas are back, glutes (bum) and hamstrings. Stretching reduces tension and allows your body to improve digestion, relax, and recover a lot quick after flying.

8. Rolling Massage Ball

This essential saved my life on my last flight. In my back pack I always carry a rolling ball, the size of a tennis ball but hard like a squash ball. I got craps down the side of one of my legs and was able to roll my leg, glute and lower back with the ball to reduce tension and the craps were gone. I generally use these when I get to my accommodate and stretch out but always great to have this back up on the plane.

9. Snacks

Always pre plan your food, this also includes meal requests when you fly. Snacks however are the best buffer. These are my favourite.
*note, I’ve been able to take these on with me but they must ALL be gone before you land or they stay on the plane.

– Avocado
– Kiwi Fruit (carry a kiwi plastic spoon/knife)
– Banana
– Pre made Salad with Roast Veg
– Nori Seaweed sheets
– Carrot / Cucumber sticks (great with avo)
– Favourite Wholefood / Real Food Bars
– Zip lock bag of nuts and seeds
– Dehydrated veg chips
