When it comes to booking a trip or holiday if you’re like me you’re super excited but you also dread the long haul travel to get there. There are a number of things I do to ensure healthy long haul travel but I like easy and simplified ways to make it all do-able. That’s why I’ve cut it right back to my top 3 insights to healthy long haul travel.
In fact these are nonnegotiable for me.
Before we delve into the insights flying high in the sky in a steal capsule that it’s zooming through space is actually quiet unhealthy. Not only do you have to be concerned for the people beside you but take into consideration the entire plane. The question that is most important is;
How can I stay balanced and fresh during the flight as well as once I’ve arrived?
So I answer that too! #winning
In the hopes of not raising anxious assumptions about how my body will actually feel, and the thought of ‘will I actually poo?’
Yep that’s one of the biggest concerns when flying, pooing. Just think of all the pressure that is put on your body not to mention your digestive system. Let’s dive straight into it starting with insight #1,
.
My 3 Insights to Healthy Long Haul Travel
#1 WATER
Water is the most important element that you must have with you everyday of your life however especially throughout your flight or travel. This does of course mean lots of trips to the toilet but I promise you your body will LOVE you for it.
Water not only keeps you hydrated in general it also keeps you lubricated too. Moistening your eyes, nose, skin from the inside out. Working to reduce the dryness that a plane environment can create in the air. On my 14 hour flight to LAX I drank 4 x 700ml bottles. I BYO my own bottle on the plane and and fill it up at the air hostesses port. Before getting on the plane, the morning of the flight I drink at least 2 litres too. This brings me up to about 4 litres in about a 20 hour time slot. May seem like a lot but in reality this about would just be enough.
If you drink alcohol while flying or before flying you’ll need to drink equally as much water as you did alcohol, plus what I drank above. Where possible avoid alcohol when flying it just dehydrates you even more increasing stress on your body.
WARNING: Water means water, it does not mean tea or coffee.
Water is life!
The type of water does mater but when you’re flying in the sky you’re limited to what is there, don’t be picky just be drinking plenty of water.
#2 BYO Food
Now I may get busted by some big awesome airline for saying this, airplane food is crap. It’s frozen meals heated up in massive microwave type machine with a long expiry date. Felt I had to write about this as I got asked this same question a few times by my Instagram family. Therefore yes I do BYO food on the plane, always and I encourage you too as well.
3 Guides to BYO’ing your food:
– What you take on the plane you must eat… on the plane. Depending on where you’re flying of course but in general if you take an avocado on the plane like I do it must be eaten before you get off the plane.
– Ensure it’s easy to eat, not messy and you can do it all from your seat. You’re not hear to make a first class meal so be prepared and prep your food.
– Take foods that will help keep you hydrated, yep high-drated. Just like #1 Water you can add to your water intake by eating foods that keep you well hydrated. My favourite for flying are: cucumber sticks, kiwi fruit, pears and berries.

#3 Vitamins
Every single cell in our body requires micronutrients to survive; vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Our cells also experiences oxidative damage day in day out and it’s these micronutrients which replenish the oxidative damage. Like making an avocado stay green longer you add antioxidants (lime/lemon juice), well our cells are the same and when I’m in one of the most oxidative damaging environments (aka planes) I like to make sure that my cells are getting all the nutrients they need.
What can having additional nutrients mean when travelling:
– Less overall body bloating and swelling
– Poo’s throughout the flight and when you arrive
– Easier transition in and out of timezones
– Better sleep
– Quicker recovery
– and, all round you don’t feel like shit.
Travelling is great but I don’t know anyone who actually looks forward to flying seated for 10+ hours knowing they’re going to feel amazing. So if nutritional products can help me feel more alive, which they do and it’s natural I’m all for it. Wouldn’t you be too?
You can learn more about what I take here. My non negotiable’s are: vitamin C, probiotic and multivitamin.
Note: if you use nutritional products already or looking into it personally I only use and recommend pharmaceutically graded products due to their high quality and trustability.
