Gluten Free Q&AWellsome Meets : Becka from Going Grainless

This week Wellsome meets a fellow health passionate who’s said goodbye to gluten.  Becka’s a 24 year old Canadian who completed school with an English degree and a Marketing Management Certificate—nether fields related to health or nutrition.   Currently working full time in sales, however Becka spends most of her spare time working on www.GoingGrainless.me.

How did your journey to giving up gluten come about?

I began living a gluten free lifestyle in 2012. Back then I rarely cooked and just ate what was most convenient— never really thinking about the impact that food was having on my body. There were so many drastic changes that happened when I changed my lifestyle. Before making the change, I didn’t enjoy eating because my body wouldn’t digest food properly—food would just sit in my stomach for hours, I had high anxiety,  was losing my hair, had low energy, was always getting sick, had terrible seasonal allergies and suffered from bad asthma my whole life. My doctor had me on stomach medications, anxiety pills, plus puffers and prednisone for my asthma. I was also on and off antibiotics a couple times a year for various sicknesses.

Within a couple of weeks, my digestion problems reversed, I could finally enjoy eating.  By three months, I could tell my hair was starting to regrow and my anxiety had disappeared. By the one-year mark, I noticed I no longer had troubles with asthma, my seasonal allergies where gone and I only had one small head cold in that whole year. It was the first time in my life that I realized the power of nutrition.

Since then I have been educating myself through reading and conversations with others to learn as much as I can about natural health and nutrition. A big problem is that pre-packaged gluten free food is highly processed, those products are not the answer when becoming gluten free. I started Going Grainless as a fun project in October 2014 to assist people seeking inspiration. I take foods that typically contain gluten and create healthy gluten free versions. It’s turned into something that I am truly passionate about.

What is it about health, nutrition and fitness you’re so passionate about?

My passion developed after going through personal changes both mentally and physically when I began taking a more natural approach to my own health and nutrition. Prescription drugs and processed foods are not the answer. They are slowly slowing killing us, but it doesn’t have to be that way. I want to use my experiences help others with gluten sensitivities and autoimmune disease. I need to show them what can happen when you make those lifestyle changes and that it is possible to feel better again.

What is the message you’re sharing in the action of changing lives for the future?

I think everyone has the power to heal themselves and maintain a healthy lifestyle. You just have to want to make that change.

What exciting ventures and intentions do you have coming up you’d like to share with Wellsome readers?

I will soon be starting a program at the Canadian School Of Natural Nutrition. I want to be a Holistic Nutritionist and have my own business. I also plan on writing a cookbook.

What is your number one piece of advice for people wanting to jump on the healthy living bandwagon?

Don’t give up. The first couple weeks are the hardest when making the transition to healthy living. I went through withdrawals when I first cut out gluten. I was addicted to bread! I got headaches and was quite irritable for the first couple weeks. I also wanted to cheat, it gets very tempting to have a gluten cheat meal here and there, but don’t do it. It ruins all of your progress. Once you get onto it, you will feel so great that you won’t ever want to touch gluten again.
